Leith Links Community Workshop – Parklife project

Later this year the ParkLife project (a collaboration between City of Edinburgh Council and University of Edinburgh) is coming to Leith Links!

Everyone who uses or has an interest in Leith Links is welcome to attend this community workshop to find out more about the project & what it means for Leith Links. This is also an opportunity to feed into the work of the project moving forward.

The workshop is being held on Monday 1 April 2019 from 6pm in Leith Community Centre – follow this link to book your seat.

The ParkLife project is looking at how new uses of data and technology can help us understand how people use and value parks. The aim is to support the city and park partners to work together to improve parks to benefit everyone. The project includes the installation of a wifi enabled model which park users can engage with, should they wish to do so.

The workshop will give you an opportunity to share and develop your ideas about ways Leith Links can be improved and how technology might be able to help. During the workshop we will design several ‘prototypes’ that could be built and installed in Leith Links. These can be anything from a digital notice board that provides information about park activities to a system for timing yourself running a mile.

You don’t need to have prior understanding of technology in order to be able to join. You just need to be a person who cares about parks! Your views are important and will directly contribute to the project. Parks are diverse spaces and we would like to hear from as many people as possible.

URGENT Leith Community Education Centre – April 2018 Newsletter

Please, find attached this month’s Newsletter from the Leith Community Education Centre Management Committee with very important information. Please, make sure to circulate this Newsletter among your group members to make sure that everyone is aware of the changes to come.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Also, please note that there is a special meeting set up by the Management Committee on the 26th of April, Thursday 7:00pm in the café to discuss the possible changes to our community centre and how they will affect the groups.

The Chairperson and Treasurer of our Management Committee are stepping down in September this year and if we won’t find volunteer to take their place we might have to shut down the centre, as it cannot run without a Management Committee.

Clean up along the Water of Leith Tuesday 17th April 10.30am

The weather forecast for next week is for us to have some sun. If you have some time to help us then please come along on  Tuesday 17th April 10.30am – 1pm.  We are having a clean up along the paths along the Water of Leith. We want will clean-up both sides of the river and walkway between Coburg Street car park – and West Bowling Green Street. We will be joining the WOL Conservation Trust Volunteer Team and staff from Change Works.  The event will also be advertised as part of Changes Work’s Earth Day,

If you are coming please wear weather appropriate clothes you do not mind getting mucky. The WOL Conservation Trust will provide all equipment for the clean-up (gloves, black bags, litter pickers etc).  We are meeting in Coalie Park and work with the team during the morning.  Here is a link to a map where an arrow points to the start location.

Hot drinks will also be provided halfway through the clean-up.
City of Edinburgh Council will take away the litter at the end of the clean-up.

ONECITY TRUST OPEN FOR GRANT APPLICATIONS

ONECITY TRUST OPEN FOR GRANT APPLICATIONS

GRANTS OF BETWEEN £5,000 AND £10,000 AVAILABLE

The OneCity Trust is pleased to announce that its main grant programme is now open for applications. Registered charities and constituted groups based in Edinburgh and focussing their work in the city. Ideally with an annual income of less than £200,000, are invited to apply for funding for equality and social inclusion projects meeting one or more of the following priorities;

  • COMMUNITY CONNECTEDNESS
  • CULTURAL BRIDGING
  • CIVIC INCLUSION

For the third year, we are also in a partnership with Travis Perkins Managed Services and the City of Edinburgh Council. This is a Community Benefit Legacy fund offered to the Council by Travis Perkins as part of a major contract and is managed through the OneCity Trust.

Applications for this funding will be considered from organisations that involve City of Edinburgh Council tenants or from other organisations aiming to benefit geographical areas with a high proportion of Council homes. 

Overall, the Trust intends to make up to 15 grants, of between £5,000 and £10,000.

Please note that the Trust is supported by the council on a part-time basis.

The deadline for applications is 20 April 2018, and projects should commence on 2 July 2018 and run for up to one year.  Please note one off projects will also be considered.   A condition of this funding agreement will be the promotion, media and photographic opportunities organised with the OneCity Trust, at any time throughout the period of the fund.  You must also acknowledge the source of your funding at every opportunity, e.g. logos on websites, promotional materials, etc.

Election hustings success

Our long awaited hustings event for candidates standing in the Leith Ward (Ward 13) was held yesterday evening in Leith Community Education Centre.

 

Four of the five candidates standing attended and answered twelve questions from the assembled audience of 35 members of our community.

 

 

Throughout the night we published various Twitter and Facebook postings using #LeithHustings view collated Tweets by us & others by clicking here.

 

 

 

 

Candidates who took part were;

  • Chas Booth (Scottish Green Party)
  • Adam McVey (Scottish National Party)
  • Gordon Munro (Scottish Labour Party)
  • Paul Penman (Scottish Conservative Party)

 

The twelve questions were diverse;

  • Trams – if they come to Leith do you support additional business rates relief for affected local businesses.
  • Poverty – what battles will candidates fight to lift families out of poverty.
  • Rape & womans rights – will candidates condemn rape clause and what is their position on the tendering of domestic abuse services.
  • Leith Links – what will they do to improve the Leith Links area, specific mention of refuse related issues on Leith Links and HMO properties surrounding the Links.
  • Rape – what will candidates do to ensure there is help for rape victims to come report such crimes, and quickly. Also, how will they ensure that the third sector doesn’t become politicised.
  • Planning – what will candidates do to ensure that people are brought to Leith / kept in Leith.
  • Environment – what will candidates do to tidy up Leith, including getting bins emptied.
  • Seafield smell – how do candidates see this being resolved.
  • Libraries – what will candidates do to ensure services maintained.
  • Housing – rent controls for Edinburgh, yes or no.
  • Democracy – candidates thoughts on ensuring more power for local democracy.
  • Environment – will candidates be taking part in the next Leithers Don’t Litter community clean up. Also, are they against bottled water being used on City of Edinburgh Council premises.

Quiz the candidates standing in Leith Ward

It’s election time again and we are hosting an opportunity for members of our community to quiz the candidates on local Leith matters on Wednesday 19 April 2017, from 18:30, in Leith Community Centre (Kirkgate). Questions will be taken from the floor so this is a real opportunity for members of our community attending to quiz the candidates on issues that matter to them, providing they are Leith related and within the power of an elected Councillor.

 

 

There are five candidates standing for three seats, all have been invited to take part;

Community Clean Up | Restalrig Road & Railway Path

There is a community clean up happening this Sunday 9 April 2017, from 11:00, meeting at the Restalrig Road bridge – this clean up will focus on Restalrig Road and the Restalrig Railway Path.

 

This was a project funded by our Community Links Fund.

 

Many hands make light work so it would be great to see as many locals as possible take part.

UPDATE:  Around twenty members of our community took part, with about 25 bags of refuse collected, some graffiti tags removed from litter bins & street lighting columns, and a ton of larger refuse items.  Well done to all those who took part.

Quiz the candidates | Leith Ward 13 election hustings

Leith Links Community Council has organised an election hustings so that local people can ask candidates standing in the City of Edinburgh Council elections what their opinion is on local important issues.

We don’t know who will be taking part yet as not all parties have selected their candidates but there is an open invitation to all parties & any independents who stand.
