Leith Community Centre extends opening hours

Leith Community Centre (Where Leith Links Community Council holds its regular monthly meetings) is extending its opening hours from Monday 2 September 2019.

Leith Creative recently described Leith Community Centre as the town hall for Leith.

The Community Centre is managed through a partnership between Leith Community Centre Association SCIO and City of Edinburgh Council. For fifty years the Community Centre in the Newkirkgate has been supporting the Leith community to access opportunities to learn and be active. The centre provides eight rooms & halls for community activities such as adult education classes, sports, exercise & dance classes & activities, local community & interest groups and even hosts the annual Leith Chooses voting event.

From Monday 2 September 2019 the new opening hours will be:

  • Monday to Friday: 9am – 9pm
  • Saturday & Sunday: 9am – 5pm

In order to support new community groups & activities to take advantage of the new Sunday opening there is a special Sunday offer for new regular bookings, entitling them to up to two hours per Sunday free for the first four weeks providing their booking starts in September.

The centre still has availability through the week, and on weekends.

John Rattray statue landscaping blooming lovely!

Recently some landscaping works have taken place in Leith Links in preparation for the arrival of a bronze statue of John Rattray. The area around the statue has been landscaped in the style of dunes which once covered the site.

Trams to Newhaven: Final Business Case published

Earlier today City of Edinburgh Council published their Final Business Case, in advance of a meeting of their Transport & Environment Committee due to be held on Thursday 28 February 2019.

The release of the Final Business Case to Committee is another step towards a full Council meeting on 14 March 2019 when a decision will be made as to whether to finish constructing the tram line to Newhaven from York Place.

Leith Community Centre celebrates fiftieth anniversary

On Sunday 10 March 2019 Leith Community Centre (which can be found at the Newkirkgate Shopping Centre) celebrates fifty years since it was officially opened on Monday 10 March 1969.

Leith Links Community Council holds its regular monthly meetings, and many of its occasional meetings in the Centre as does Leith Harbour & Newhaven Community Council and many other local groups.

A day of celebration is being held to mark the occasion and members of the Leith community are encouraged to attend.

The afternoon begins with a number of free taster sessions, followed by two parties (tickets are free but should be booked).
