General Election 2019 | Hustings information

A General Election is being held on Thursday 12 December 2019, the United Kingdom will go to the polls to elect 650 Members of Parliament to sit in the House of Commons (the lower house of the United Kingdom Parliament).

Hustings are being arranged across the United Kingdom, in various formats, to allow voters to in some way question or debate with candidates.

The Leith Links Community Council area sits within two constituencies;

  • Edinburgh East
  • Edinburgh North and Leith

We therefore thought it would be useful to let you know about a hustings taking part in each constituency, which you may wish to participate in.

Leith Links Residents Association lodge formal complaint against Scottish Environmental Protection Agency in relation to Seafield odour

Leith Links Residents Association recently undertook a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to pay for a solicitor to represent community complaints regarding odour from Seafield.Image result for seafield odour

Having raised sufficient funds they engaged Ian Cowan to write to the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman on their behalf.

John Rattray statue update

Earlier this year the John Rattray statue and the associated landscaping & information signage was officially unveiled. This was a project delivered by Leith Rules Golf Society.Image result for john rattray golf

Since then the area has remained fenced off but we can provide the community with the following update:

 

 

 

 

The plan was for the mounds to be a mix of maritime grasses that would be found on a links course. Marrim grasses were planted and to support their growth a selection of other grasses was seeded on the mounds. Unfortunately this mix included poppy seeds which dominated the mounds and although very attractive was not what was proposed and suffocated the grasses.

The landscaping company will rectify this error but the results won’t be known until next summer. The city council museums department appear to be ready to accept the statue when they’re paid £6000 but the parks department aren’t prepared to take ownership of the mounds until the landscaping is sorted. This means that the fencing currently round the whole site will be moved to allow access to the statue but still be in place round the landscaping.

Scottish Historic Buildings Trust seek your views on future of Custom House

The Scottish Historic Buildings Trust (SHBT) is considering how Custom House should be developed in the long term. Their questionnaire follows extensive consultations with individuals and organisations plus displays at the 7 Open Days in Custom House.

Their short survey has been developed from the consultations. It is intended to help them build on these and ensure Custom House’s future includes the ideas and needs of everyone in the local community.

Their questionnaire is designed for:

  • People who live or work in Leith
  • Organisations and businesses who are involved in Leith
  • People with an interest in the development of Custom House
They would be grateful if you could complete the questionnaire as soon as possible – by Monday 6th January 2020 at the latest. After they have analysed the results, they will report back on them.
All your entries will be anonymised and they will only contact you again if you provide your contact details at the end of the survey.

Leith Festival Funfair plan being considered by City of Edinburgh Council

City of Edinburgh Council are considering an application to for a funfair to be brought to Leith Links in 2020 as part of Leith Festival.

Leith Links Community Council will, as always, include a copy of our policy on events held on Leith Links.

Unfortunately, the Council provides a very short window to consider & respond to applications, with the Community Council response to be submitted by Friday 29 November 2019.

Leith Links Community Council would ask our community to submit their views, concerns and / or suggestions in relation to this current application to us by noon on Wednesday 27 November 2019, this will allow us to take them into account & include them in our formal response to the application. To submit your views, concerns and / or suggestions please use the form at the end of this post.

Police Scotland consultation: Local & national priorities & communications

Police Scotland would like to know what issues you think they should prioritise, nationally and in our local area, as well as the best methods for communicating with you.

Your views are important to them and they are committed to using the information to shape their policing priorities – both locally in our area and nationally. They will do this through analysing our feedback and looking at data from a number of other important sources such as local and national crime trends.

What you tell them will also influence how they communicate and engage with you and our community.

Annual Review of Major Events in Parks 2018/19 and Consultation on Future Events

Leith Links is an valued greenspace within the Leith community. The land is managed by City of Edinburgh Council who from time to time consider applications by businesses, community groups & third sector organisations to hold major events on the greenspace.

The City of Edinburgh Council is looking to gather your views around specific major efforts in greenspaces across the City including Leith Links. They are also asking your views in relation to adding Leith Links to a list of greenspaces where the Council promote & adverse a greenspace as a location for commercial activities.

It is important that our community take the time to complete the consultation in order that the Council can get as many views, questions & suggestions in relation to Leith Links so that they can find a way forward to appropriately managed Leith Links.

Trams to Newhaven: Leith Walk planters relocated to Duke Street / Easter Road / Vanburgh Place / Lochend Road signalised junction

The Trams to Newhaven Team have said that in order to facilitate construction of Trams to Newhaven project, the 14 planters that are currently situated on Leith Walk will be moved to the Leith Links / Duke Street / Lochend Road / Easter Road junction. This will be a permanent move in order to accommodate dedicated cycling lanes post construction. The planters will be moved as part of the enabling works commencing on Monday 18 November 2019.

They went on to say – ‘We are aware that some businesses / residents have been looking after the planters and where this is known we have made contact to explain. An example of this is the Kadampa Meditation Centre who we visited to explain what is happening and to thank them for the work they have done. We will be attaching posters to the planters this week to highlight the planters being moved.’
