Events in parks consultation

A survey seeking people’s views on the Edinburgh’s Parks Events Manifesto begins today, 21 January 2014 and closes on 21 March 2014.

The City’s parks are home to a number of high profile festivals and events every year. These events enhance the city’s reputation, generate significant economic benefit for the region and add to Edinburgh’s cultural and community activity. However, it is also recognised that these events can impact on the parks themselves, as well as how they are used by local people and others.

Our Parks Events Manifesto enables us to assess which events take place within our parks and green spaces. It outlines how many events should take place in each park and provides the criteria to help us decide if a request is suitable. As well as providing criteria tailored to those parks used most frequently for events, the document also provides a framework for a balanced events programme and aims to make sure that the quality of the land is maintained to the highest standard possible.

The survey is now open for anyone who has an interest in Edinburgh’s parks.

Once the survey is complete we will analyse the results and present these to the Transport and Environment Committee on 3 June 2014.

LEITH WALK 2011 CENSUS RESULTS

The City of Edinburgh Council have produced an information bulletin which I’ve attached but the main points for Leith make interesting reading below.

2011 leith census

In common with many other cities, population densities in Edinburgh are highest in inner suburban areas surrounding the commercial core of the city centre, notably in the Leith Walk, Fountainbridge and South Side areas.

The location with the highest population density in Edinburgh is the Leith Walk area, with a peak of nearly 26,000 people resident within an 800 metre radius (equivalent to a density of 12,900 persons per sq.km.). This is a higher local population density than anywhere else in Scotland, including Glasgow.
Indeed further investigation reveals that Edinburgh contains some of the highest local population densities in the UK outside London, exceeded only by Brighton and Portsmouth, and slightly ahead of Leicester.

Since 2001 there has been a very significant growth of population in the areas surrounding Leith Walk (up to 30% increase), as a result of new house building on brownfield land, together with refurbishment of existing properties.
The census results makes me ask the question why do so many Leith residents feel they don’t get a fair share of resources ?You can’t argue with census results which would indicate more money is needed in the area.Parks, cleansing, play equipment and Leith Walk.

Bin collection for the festive season

Members briefing 432: Bin collection arrangements for the festive season

This briefing is to provide you with information on the changes to bin days over the festive season from Wednesday 25 December 2013 to Tuesday 7 January 2014.

We want to ensure that we get this information about the arrangements out to every affected resident. We have a communications campaign running from this week throughout the festive period.

However, any additional support that you can give to help let residents in your ward know about the arrangements would be appreciated. Please direct them to our website www.edinburgh.gov.uk/recycle  or our contact centre on 0131 529 3030 for further information.

Green, brown and food waste bins and red and blue box collections

Bins will not be collected on 25 December and 1 January but will instead be picked up on Saturday 28 December and Saturday 4 January respectively.

If we don’t pick up the bin on the day listed above, we are asking residents to leave it out until we collect it.

Please note that unlike previous years collections that fall on Boxing Day 26 December and Thursday 2 January will happen as normal. Residents should ensure that there bins are out by 6am on the collection day.

 Christmas tree recycling

Christmas trees can be recycled at any of our three Community Recycling Centres which will be open throughout the festive period (except for 25 & 26 Dec and 1 & 2 January)

We will also be providing a kerbside Christmas Tree recycling collection. If residents have a brown bin or live in a brown bin area, they are being asked to place their tree at the kerbside, next to the brown bin, by 6am on the next garden waste day.

To enable trees to be recycled residents are reminded to:

·         Remove all decorations from the Christmas tree

·         If the tree is 6ft tall or more, please cut it in half

·         Do not place trees in plastic bags, as this means we cannot recycle it

·         Remove any tree stands

.We will also be collecting trees from communal bin areas during January. Residents can go towww.edinburgh.gov.uk/recycle for more details.

 2014 collection calendars

There are no changes to collection days for 2014. Residents can download their collection calendars atwww.edinburgh.gov.uk/recycle or call 0131 529 3030 for a copy.

Special uplifts

There will be no special uplift service between Tuesday 24 December and 7 January. Normal service will resume on Tuesday 7 January.

THE LEITH PROGRAMME – Update 21.11.13

Draft phasing plan

As the Constitution Street junction improvements are now completed, early next year the Leith Programme work will progress into Leith Walk. A draft phasing plan showing the estimated phasing of the works and start times is now on our website for your information. We will regularly review this plan and update it should there be any significant changes to take into account.

Constitution Street/Bernard Street junction

The Constitution Street, Bernard Street and Baltic Street junction, the final phase of the northerly section of the Leith Programme, is now open and work on the adjacent pavements has been completed. A number of planters containing trees are still to be put in place in two separate locations in Constitution Street and, following the delivery of the trees, installation should happen in late November or in early December. You may still see a minimal  presence from the contractors in the area over the next couple of days as there are small areas of lining to be carried out but this will be carried out with little or no disruption.

We would like to thank you for their patience during these works and hope that the new road surface, pavements and pedestrian crossings improve the area for everyone who lives, works or visits. We appreciate that some of you have been in touch to let us know about specific concerns; your input has helped us to manage the programme and strive to minimise disruption for all as far as possible.

Early next year The Leith Programme work will progress into Leith Walk and, again, we will work with the community and traders immediately affected to endeavour to minimise disruption.

Regards

Alan
