This shows a list of all of the projects and organisations applying and a link that gives more detail of how the money will be used.

Thanks for participating, if you did.

Once again this was a very successful exercise in democratic / participative budgeting. Unfortunately, it seems that the smaller charities / minorities’  projects tend to miss out just by the sheer force of the numbers of ‘supporters’ voting. To change this pattern, more people need to participate that are impartial  – maybe you’d like to take part and vote next year?

The decision-making event is on 15 February 2014 at the Leith Community Education Centre at New Kirkgate.  Registration opens at 12.30 pm with a ‘marketplace’ of project stalls from 1.00 pm till 3.00 pm. This is your opportunity to find out more about the projects before you score them.

Events in parks consultation

A survey seeking people’s views on the Edinburgh’s Parks Events Manifesto begins today, 21 January 2014 and closes on 21 March 2014.

The City’s parks are home to a number of high profile festivals and events every year. These events enhance the city’s reputation, generate significant economic benefit for the region and add to Edinburgh’s cultural and community activity. However, it is also recognised that these events can impact on the parks themselves, as well as how they are used by local people and others.

Our Parks Events Manifesto enables us to assess which events take place within our parks and green spaces. It outlines how many events should take place in each park and provides the criteria to help us decide if a request is suitable. As well as providing criteria tailored to those parks used most frequently for events, the document also provides a framework for a balanced events programme and aims to make sure that the quality of the land is maintained to the highest standard possible.

The survey is now open for anyone who has an interest in Edinburgh’s parks.

Once the survey is complete we will analyse the results and present these to the Transport and Environment Committee on 3 June 2014.

LEITH WALK 2011 CENSUS RESULTS

The City of Edinburgh Council have produced an information bulletin which I’ve attached but the main points for Leith make interesting reading below.

2011 leith census

In common with many other cities, population densities in Edinburgh are highest in inner suburban areas surrounding the commercial core of the city centre, notably in the Leith Walk, Fountainbridge and South Side areas.

The location with the highest population density in Edinburgh is the Leith Walk area, with a peak of nearly 26,000 people resident within an 800 metre radius (equivalent to a density of 12,900 persons per sq.km.). This is a higher local population density than anywhere else in Scotland, including Glasgow.
Indeed further investigation reveals that Edinburgh contains some of the highest local population densities in the UK outside London, exceeded only by Brighton and Portsmouth, and slightly ahead of Leicester.

Since 2001 there has been a very significant growth of population in the areas surrounding Leith Walk (up to 30% increase), as a result of new house building on brownfield land, together with refurbishment of existing properties.
The census results makes me ask the question why do so many Leith residents feel they don’t get a fair share of resources ?You can’t argue with census results which would indicate more money is needed in the area.Parks, cleansing, play equipment and Leith Walk.
