The Mela returns to Leith Links from 31st August to 1st September. The headline act this year will be The Orb who will be on stage on Sunday night. The Green Dog Walkers Scheme has been launched in Edinburgh to encourage pet owners to take responsibility and clean up after them.
Volunteers pledge to encourage changes in attitudes about dog fouling in a non-confrontational, friendly way. Dog walkers are encouraged to act as ambassadors for responsible ownership and are asked to ‘pledge’ to always:
Developed by Falkirk Council, the scheme has had such a positive effect that it has been adopted by several local authorities.
Results include a drop in the number of complaints about dog fouling, an increase in local cleanliness scores, and positive feedback from the public.
Councillor Lesley Hinds, Transport and Environment Convener, said: “Evidence from other local authorities which have adopted the Green Dog Walkers Scheme shows that it has had a lot of success in tackling the anti-social issue of fouling.
“I would like to thank the many responsible dog walkers who do care about the environment and pick up waste. If anyone has any concerns about dog fouling, I urge them to call the Dish the Dirt hotline on 0300 456 3476.”
The scheme will be rolled out through community groups in the south of the city initially, with others areas following afterwards. Anyone who is interested in the scheme should contact their local environmental wardens through their neighbourhood office.

The City of Edinburgh Council’s Adult Edcuation Programme for this autumn has now been published.
A wide range of subjects is offered that includes art, languages, computing, cookery, dance and music.
Course are offered during the day, the evening and at weekends. Some last for 1 day and some continue until next Easter. There is something fdor everyone.

The Leith Programme –email update 28 – Constitution Street open to traffic – 1 August
Following the road resurfacing work, Constitution Street fully reopened to two-way traffic again on 1 August. The squads on site will now be focusing on completing the laying of the Caithness slabs on both east and west side footways in order to endeavour to meet the 16 August completion schedule.
The west side footway, from Maritime Lane northwards, has been widened and a significant amount of resurfacing has already been completed there. For people who haven’t seen this part of Constitution Street recently, it’s well worth a visit to see the changes that are being made. These changes, it is hoped, will result in the area getting a real lift that benefits residents, businesses and visitors and increase the street’s attractiveness as a destination point.

The £eith decides Steering Group meet on 25 November 2013 to assess applications against Community Grants Criteria. It is expected that invitations to take part in the Libraries Poster Exhibition and decision-making event will be sent to all applicants whose projects meet community grants criteria by 6 December 2013.
A poster exhibition of projects will take place in McDonald Road and Leith Libraries from 13 January to 7 February 2014. You may score projects in the library or submit scores by post up to 5.00 pm on 7 February 2013. Please Note: If you score projects in the library or by post you cannot score projects again at the event. Library and/or postal scoring sheets will not be accepted after 7 February 2013.
The decision-making event is on 15 February 2014 at the Leith Community Education Centre at New Kirkgate. Previous participating Local Community Groups have found that the events provide a valuable opportunity to promote themselves, recruit new volunteers and/or participants, network with other groups as well as the possibility of being made a community grant award. Local People have said that the events are fun and that they enjoy learning about Leith through the applicant groups.
There are lots of reasons for taking part, either as an applicant or in scoring projects to make the decision on which projects are given a community grant.
