Concerning Wastewater Spill at Seafield Waste Water Treatment Works

As a local stakeholder Leith Links Community Council (LLCC) maintain communication with Scottish Water and Veolia surrounding the ongoing activities and any updates about Seafield Waste Water Treatment Works.

Recently, we were sent the below notice by Scottish Water relating to the storm on Wednesday 23rd September which raised real concerns and we wanted to bring it to the attention of the local community.

“Dear Stakeholder, during the period of intense rain affecting much of the City on Wednesday morning [23rd September], there was localised flooding at the Seafield Wastewater Treatment Works that impacted parts of Marine Esplanade. The works were fully operational at the time of the flood.

A response team was immediately activated, with tankers deployed to clear wastewater and a clean-up operation was undertaken and completed on Marine Esplanade and on parts of the works which were affected.

Throughout this period, the site continued to treat wastewater. Regular operations have now resumed, and although the issue was directly linked to the extreme rainfall Edinburgh experienced on Wednesday morning, a thorough investigation is ongoing to understand the full cause of the incident.

Our normal routine maintenance programme is continuing, as is the work on the new investment programme, and we will continue to communicate any potentially odorous activities to be carried out onsite.”

This incident further underscores how important future proofing will be for the Seafield facility and LLCC will continue to monitor the situation.
