Scotland’s leading Volunteer Recruitment Fair is on Wednesday, 21st September 2016!

Volunteer Edinburgh, as well as 50+ voluntary organisations, will join together on Wednesday, 21st September 2016 between 11.00am and 7.00pm at St Paul’s and St Georges Church on York Place to host Scotland’s leading Volunteer Recruitment Fair.

Entry is free to the public, and we expect more than a thousand visitors to come along to find out about the widespread variety of volunteering opportunities available across Edinburgh with charities, social enterprises and the public sector.

This year, in addition representation form a wide-range of volunteer involving organisations, there will be free special learning zone workshops happening throughout the day.

When visitors need to sit down after taking in all this new information there’s a café serving delicious food and drink run by bespoke organic events (boe), an Edinburgh based social enterprise.

Volunteering helps people build new skills, get a taste of different working environments, create new friendships and boost individual confidence and wellbeing.

For those seeking a route into work, volunteering also adds skills to CVs as well as providing work experience and up-to-date references.

Making the choice to give your time and expertise to help others is a positive and meaningful commitment, with big rewards for the volunteer and the organisation or clients that the volunteer donates their time to. The Volunteer Recruitment Fair is the perfect way to match those who want to make the best use of their time with those who benefit from their input. It’s also an opportunity to publicise Edinburgh’s vibrant Third Sector community.

Friends of the Water of Leith Basin

Hello

Following our successful joint Graffiti cleanup with Mark Robinson from CEC on the 24th July when we cleaned the Pumbase wall we would like to collect all the rubbish that has accumulated. along the path ways.

Once again this is a joint cleanup with the WoL ConsevationTrust so all are welcome.

Edinburgh 20mph Speed Limits – Go Live
From Sunday 31 July, the legal speed limit in streets across much of Edinburgh’s city centre and rural west area will go down to 20mph, the first phase in a planned rollout of lower speeds across the Capital.

The new speed limits are designed to increase safety for all road users in Edinburgh as well as creating a calmer, more people-friendly environment in shopping and residential streets. A network of key arterial roads across the city will be retained at 30mph and 40mph, resulting in a modest impact on journey times overall.

Our phased 20mph rollout between now and early 2018 brings to fruition many years of planning and public consultation and the network has been designed in line with robust criteria in partnership with key stakeholders such as Police Scotland and Lothian Buses.

Police Scotland will enforce the new limit, focusing on areas where particularly high levels of contraventions are recorded. Anyone caught breaching the limit risks a £100 fixed penalty and three penalty points on their licence.

We have long recognised that a majority of city residents want to see speed limits reduced in the city centre, around residential areas and in busy shopping streets.

The next meeting of Leith Links Community Council will take place on Monday, 27th June in the Shore Room of Leith Community Centre, New Kirkgate.
This should be a good meeting with guests from NHS Lothian explaining the work they do with prostitutes one the Leith Links area. It will your chance to ask questions about this on going problem.

Yes it’s that time of year again. If your free on Saturday come down to Leith Links and enjoy a day at the Gala. There will be lots of stalls to investigate and find out more about local groups working for you in the Leith area. There’s music, food,funfare and a chance to meet up with old friends. The stalls are normally there between 10am and  4pm so it would great to see you.

Edinburgh 20mph Speed Limits – first signs and lines going down

Edinburgh is the first city in Scotland implementing a citywide 20mph network. The new limit aims to reduce the risk and severity of road collisions, encourage travel on foot and by bike and help make the city’s streets more people-friendly.

The phased roll out of the 20mph network is planned over 18 months between June 2016 and February 2018. The city centre and rural west Edinburgh form the first phase, with the installation of signs and lines commencing at the beginning of June. Work is scheduled to take 8 – 10 weeks, with minimal disruption expected. The new speed limit for this phase becomes effective on 31 July 2016.

Approximately 50% of Edinburgh’s residential streets are already in 20mph zones. The project extends the 20mph speed limit to the city centre, main shopping streets and residential areas while retaining a strategic network of roads at 30mph and 40mph. Large 20mph signs will define the entrance and exit of a 20mph area where the speed limit changes, followed by smaller repeater signs or road markings with speed limit roundels. Quick drying paint, with a traffic cone system will be used to install roundels at night.

Police Scotland support lower speeds across the city and are working with the Council to achieve this. Other partners including NHS Lothian, Lothian Buses, Living Streets, Spokes and Neighbourhood Partnerships are working with the Council to deliver the strategy. A high level of publicity and awareness raising is scheduled around the time when the schools return in August and in September 2016.

Just a wee reminder that Leith Links CC will be holding our AGM on Monday, 30th May.
The meeting will be held in the Shore Room , Leith Community Centre starting at 7pm.
I’ve invited Teague Homes who will bring display boards showing their proposed development of Salamander Place and we also have members of The Dry Dock Cafe which is based in the old bowling green pavilion to tell us how they plan to develop the site to assist those in recovery.

This is an important year for the community councils in Edinburgh with elections taking place in September.
Earlier this year Leith Links CC had successful interim elections to continue running but will have to go through the same process again in three months time.

We need your help to continue so if your interested please come on Monday to find out more about how we try to help you in the local area.
